On Wednesday, Mount Carmel CEO visited West Berwick Golf Course to speak with board member Eric Ikemire and general manager Jake Holcomb. Eric began by giving a brief history of the golf course, which started as a private country club back in the 1920s, but soon after was taken over by the City and converted into a public golf course. In 2018, the City approached the West Berwick Golf Club about the taking over day-to-day management of the course and pro shop, which was done by way of creating a 501(c)4 not-for-profit entity called West Berwick Management, Inc. Shortly thereafter, the gutted and totally renovated the old pro shop, adding a restaurant and bar called Stymie's Rest. The following year, Jake was hired to oversee operations of the pro shop and restaurant. He also has a degree in turf management and a wealth of experience working at other golf courses. The two gentlemen then segued into talking about the future of the facility. "In business," said Ikemire, "you always have to be looking toward the future." Holcomb also spoke about what it takes to manage a business. "You have to be willing to be the first one there and the last one to leave," he said, and "you have to be willing to fill in and do whatever needs to be done." Many thanks to Eric and Jake for taking time to speak with our team this morning. Please remember, Stymie's Rest is for everyone - not just avid golfers. It has a great family atmosphere, and now they even serve Sunday brunch! So, if you haven't already, be sure to drop by and check it out!
