On Wednesday morning, Mount Carmel CEO ventured out to northern Edwards County to tour Joy Lane Produce with Andrew Spray. Andrew and his wife Heather started their greenhouse business four years ago, which is named after a previous business that was located on their property. Joy Lane is a hydroponic horticulture operation which produces red and green leaf lettuce, as well as bib and romaine lettuce, arugula, collared greens, kale and sweet basil. The entire operation is hydroponic, so there is no soil used at all. This enables them to better control the growing environment and produce a crop all 12 months of the year. They are primarily a wholesale operation, though they do have a retail shop on-site. Some examples of the restaurants they service are R’z, the Red Cafe, Pangea Kitchen, Smitty’s, the Gerst Haus and the Farmer & the Frenchman, just to name a few. Andrew knows he’s not always going to have the cheapest produce on the market, so Joy Lane focuses his energy on having the highest quality product.
