On Tuesday morning, Mount Carmel CEO welcomed Katie Slane as our guest speaker. Growing up in rural Missouri, Katie knew from a very young age that she wanted to go into nursing. She ultimately did become a nurse, working her way up to a level 1 trauma ICU at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Her husband, Chris, who also works in health care as an anasthesia provider, took a job here in Mt Carmel at WGH, which is what brought the family to our community where, in her words, "it just felt like home." Initially, leaving behind the life they had built in St. Louis was not an easy thing, but Katie found a way to merge her entrepreneurial spirit with her passion for health and nutrition, as she started a new career in sales with the Juice Plus company. As with her experiences in nursing, she has discovered that this new undertaking, too, is a just a series of learning and relearning, which she views as part and parcel of her own personal growth. Along with sharing some of her lived experiences, Katie also shared a few quotes that have served as words of wisdom for her. "Leaders drive the culture," she explained, and "culture isn't just one thing, it's everything." Quite right. A very big thank you to Katie for joining the class this morning to share her insights with the students - and for the baked goods and goodie bags! It's much appreciated.
