On Wednesday, Eric Ikemire and Jake Holcomb met the class at the West Berwick Golf Course and Stymie’s, the restaurant located inside. Eric explained to us how this 18 hole golf course in Mt Carmel is still owned by the city, but in 2009 a private club called the West Berwick Golf Club was formed to take over the maintenance and day to day operations. This non-for-profit organization started the process of improving the golf course while also renovating a building to incorporate in a restaurant and pro shop which opened in June 2019. The goal was to create a public golf course with a country club atmosphere. A place that the community would feel comfortable coming, as well as draw attention from out of town golfers. Jake then explained his role as superintendent of the course. Previously he had this same position in Henderson KY, but spent more time outside managing the course. Here his time is spent more inside managing the day to day operation and the restaurant. Jake explained the certifications he is required for his job and encouraged the students to join associations or groups to network. Eric and Jake are both happy to see the pandemic slowing down and people returning to the golf course again!
