When the Dos Equis beer company created their “Most Interesting Man In The World” ad campaign, they might have used Ed McPherson as their model, which is to say, he has been just about everywhere and done just about everything you can do in business. ‘Ed doesn’t always speak to CEO classes,’ but when he does, he certainly doesn’t disappoint. He began this morning's talk by sharing his education background, about which he made no particular claims to fame. “School is important initially,” he explained, “but then that fades away and it becomes more about perseverance and work ethic.” He then walked the group through his career in the world of corporate marketing and sales with organizations such as Burger King, PepsiCo (KFC), Gateway Computers, Einstein Bagels and Sears. During that same period of his life, he found an outlet for his entrepreneurial spirit by purchasing and renovating real estate back here in his hometown of Mount Carmel. Eventually, he started a billboard business, McPherson Outdoor, which has also become a very successful enterprise. Before wrapping up, Ed offered the students some advice about utilizing a personal financial statement to help them reach their financial objectives as they move through their own careers after graduation. As a formula for success, he encouraged the group to develop marketable skills, work hard and take risks. “Stuff won’t come to you, you have to go get it,” he told them. “Get after it, and stay after it.” Thank you, Ed, for taking time to share your experiences and wisdom with the CEO class this morning!
